How to download movies for the Playstation 3

Summer has arrived and so have a stream of new releases on the Playstation Network so when your thumbs get tired, you can relax then in a plate of ice and watch some of the newest releases. If you have no idea what I'm on about or don't own a Playstaion and want to buy one and are wondering if it's worth your time, I'll give a quick explanation as to what this is.

The Playstation Network is like Sony's own private network for owners of a Playstation 3 or PSP. They put up various different content that ranges from games, expansion packs, levels, themes, comics and movies. You can rent your movies using a credit card or PSN card and download onto your console. Before I let you on to the latest releases, there are some things you should note if you are new to this.

A movie must be watched within 14 days of rental. When you do start watching, you have 48 hours to finish. So if you're one of these strange people who watch an hour of a movie first and then save the exitement for next week, this might not work for you. If however, you're a normal human being and usually watch a movie in one go this won't be a problem. You can also watch the movie as it's being downloaded but the 48 hour time limit starts counting down from that time too so make sure your connection is fast enough before you try.

When you download a movie you can also watch it on either a PSP or Playstation 3 system under your account. This only applies to standard definition, not HD. If it's a HD rental then you can only watch it on one system. And a copy of a movie rental can only be watched on one system at a time. But that's all fairly standard restrictions to keep the network available. It won't be a problem if you have a decent internet connection.

What are the latest releases I can't hear you ask? Well...

  • Undisputed 3: Redemption (some bad ass prisoners partake in brutal bare-knuckle boxing for a shot at freedom)
  • Avatar
  • Where The Wild Things Are
  • Armoured
  • All About Steve (I've never heard of this one but I think it's about a man called Steve)
  • Daybreaks
  • Capitalism: A Love Story (Michael Moore returns to put the white collars of Wall Street and congress on the spot and see where everyone's money went all the time while wearing a hat)

Upcoming releases include Invictus, Sherlock Holmes, Crazy Heart, and Leap Year. There's enough entertainment here to keep you occupied between World Cup matches and those times where your thumbs break playing games.
